So you’re looking for some Royalty Free images, but not sure where to look This article will help.

Photos and images add another dimension to your online content. The trouble is if you do not have a camera handy or struggle with creating illustrations, you may need to resort to using someone else’s work. Unfortunately, you can’t just swipe any image you like from the web, if you do, you may be facing copyright infringements.

In some cases if a photo is produced by a budding young professional, eager to get their work out there, you may be able to get in touch with them and ask permission to use their work on your site, perhaps with a link back to their portfolio citing their name, known as an image attribution.

However with the larger more established photo libraries such as Getty, you could face a fine for using an image without purchasing a license, and believe me you don’t want to receive one of those letters, you could be looking at between £600 to £750 per image for copyright damages.

What are Royalty Free Images?

Another option is to use Royalty Free Images.

  • Royalty Free – a royalty free image is one that you can use without having to pay royalties or license fees.

However there are a few different terms that you may see when browsing royalty free images:

  • Attribution – These images can be used on the condition that credit is given to the original author.
  • Commercial Use – These images can be used for business purposes
  • Membership – You must have a membership account with the site in order to use these royalty free images, some sites may charge a membership fee.
  • Public Domain – These images can be used, modified, redistributed without permission.
Interesting fact: In the UK – generally speaking, artworks enter the public domain 70 years after the death of the artist so fall out of copyright, there are some exceptions. In the US; if the image was created before 1923 then it’s part of the public domain.
  • Creative Commons – You can use these images for free as the photographer or artist has waived their rights to their work. However, review any terms to creative commons images.
